Theo Jansen’s @strandbeests Walk the Beaches of Miami
For more photos and videos of the Strandbeestsin Miami, follow @peabodyessex on Instagram and browse the #strandbeests hashtag.
Until December 7, Theo Jansen’s kinetic, wind-powered creatures will roam the beaches of Miami, Florida. “This is the first time the Strandbeests have been shown here, and this will be a very different stage to the Dutch coastline for my creatures,” says Theo, who is from the Netherlands. “It will be great to see the works walking in the sunlight, casting shadows across the sand.”
The larger-than-life scale, intricate construction and varied materials of the Strandbeests make them compelling subjects for documentation. “The creatures also move in an eerily lifelike fashion across the beach,” Theo says, “which makes them an interesting subject for film. Video and photography will help to capture and preserve the moments within the lives of my ‘Strandbeests,’ reproducing them in the minds of new audiences around the world.”
The Strandbeests walk every day at 10:30am and 4:30pm on the beach between 21st and 22nd streets.
