“My Instagram photos are also a reflection of my daily life. I see it as a personal visual diary as well as an extension of my assignment work,” says Jane Hahn (@janehahn), a professional American photographer based in Dakar, Senegal. “The ease of mobile photography and the immediacy of Instagram pushed me to look for the small everyday beauties that were being overshadowed by years of daily frustrations and rediscover why I chose West Africa as a base in the first place.”

Jane’s images of simple and elegant moments of daily life across West Africa also carry the intention of revealing a perspective on Africa typically not shown across most media outlets. “I hope to challenge people’s preconceived ideas about life in these places through my work—to look beyond the exotic and balance out what is seen in the mainstream media.”
