The sun seeking vacationers who fill up the beaches of Benidorm, Spain are favorite subjects for photographer Maria Moldes (@mariamoldes). “It’s a tourist town and retirees from all over Europe come here to spend their vacation,” says Maria, who is based in the nearby city of Alicante. “I’m most interested in older people because their faces are so expressive. They teach you the marks of life.”

Since receiving a photography grant two years ago, Maria has been dedicated to photography almost full time. Her signature style is to bring out the absurd and other-worldly from the banal beach scenes along Spain’s Mediterranean coast. “I love Sci-Fi and mystery movies, and when I go out to make pictures I always let my imagination fly. Reality is often boring and depressing, so I use my imagination to make my own world. My ideal world would be like a Hitchcock film.”
