It looks like a random assortment of paint splotches on a building in Tucson, Arizona. But catch them at the right angle, and in the right light, and it turns into a well-crafted, colorful piece of street art.

“When photographing a composition like this, I feel a debt of gratitude toward all of the different individuals who helped contribute to it,” says 41-year-old Demetri Enriquez (@demetri__), of Portland, Oregon, describing the above photo. “Images like this are the product of several different people who, over long periods of time, all engage in a sort of unintentional collaboration. They do all the work. All I have to do is show up and put a frame around it.”

When it comes to photographing new surroundings, the full-time developer, part-time photographer takes the shape, color, texture and various architectural elements into play. For him, it’s about finding the balance between carefully crafted lines, along with the more chaotic elements of street art.

While Demetri doesn’t limit himself to still images — he often captures elegant, minimalist videos of flags, kites and streams — it’s street landscapes that truly seize his attention. Like any photographer, he’s looking to show people something they’ve never seen before.

“These compositions are often overlooked while one passes by them on the street,” says Demetri. “That is why I document them.”
