#MeetMeJapan Project Kicks Off in Japan

From the snow-covered region of Hokkaido to the southern islands of Okinawa, Instagrammers from all over Japan are going out with their phones and cameras this month to celebrate the kickoff of a nationwide InstaMeet project called #MeetMeJapan. Announced last month by some of Japan’s most passionate members of the community, the project invites users across the country to organize InstaMeets in locations of Japan they love to capture, and share those places with the rest of the community.

In response to the callout, over 100 Instagrammers from all 47 prefectures of Japan have raised their hands to host an InstaMeet during the month of February. One organizer, Masayuki Nishikawa (@tosa_nishikawa), welcomed 11 Instagrammers to the southern countryside of Kagawa prefecture, where they visited Ogijima, a tiny island located in the Seto Inland Sea. For Masayuki, #MeetMeJapan serves not only as a way to grow the network of Instagrammers living in his region, but it also informs people about his home prefecture. “On this island that’s connected to the mainland by only one boat, the time runs very slowly and the traditional landscape of Seto still remains,” he says. “As many of the islands of Seto are currently facing depopulation, I am hosting this InstaMeet with hopes of telling the beauty of the islands and inspiring more people to visit them.”
