The Scene Backstage at New York Fashion Week

Freelance photographer Spencer Kohn (@spencerkohn) says he can die happy after shooting backstage at the Hood by Air show at New York Fashion Week. “It was my number one show to shoot,” he says. “It was grotesque, but extremely beautiful.” Hood by Air (@hoodbyair) is an up-and-coming house with a cult following founded by 27-year-old Shayne Oliver. For this photo, Spencer arranged the custom dental grills designed for the show by Dolly Cohen (@dollycohen), then captured them with a flash. “It gave an in-the-moment appeal to the photograph,” he says. “I love capturing every aspect of the scene backstage like it’s a story.”
Spencer’s background in studio photography means that he usually knows at least one model at every show and approaches the scene backstage like a set. “I give the models crazy directions,” he says. “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes I get model-shamed.”
Olivia Locher (@olivialocher), a freelance photographer shooting backstage beauty at shows like Proenza Schouler (@proenzaschouler), Jason Wu (@jasonwu) and Thom Browne (@thombrowneny), prefers to remain unseen and unheard. “When I’m backstage, I allow for moments to naturally happen by having very little interaction with the models,” she says. “Beauty is my favorite because things are the most chill at that time. No one seems extremely rushed or stressed so it gives photographers time to be creative and not fight over the same shot.”
Not that Olivia’s unwilling to fight for a chance to photograph. “When I first moved to New York City five years ago, I would do anything I could to get in and shoot,” she says. “One season a friend made a fake all-access photography pass for me and it worked.”
