Magic Moments Backstage at Paris Fashion Week

After shooting backstage at fashion shows in London and Paris for four years, London-based photographer Ambra Vernuccio (@ambravernuccio) says she could write a guidebook on how to survive fashion week. “The quality of the images need to be as good as a studio portrait,” she says. “You need to read the trends and identify the intricate details that will be picked up by the press and highlight them.”

Ambra says you also have to be fast and attentive. “Three main things help: playful models, an abundance of space, and time,” she says. “You only have a few seconds to capture that magic moment before someone from production, hair, makeup or a fellow photographer gets into your shot and breaks it. I try to immortalize and deliver the vision of the designer through my images.”

Backstage highlights from this season included Lady Gaga’s (@ladygaga) dark portrayal of the details in Balenciaga's (@balenciaga) presentation and the photographer Greg Kessler's (@gregbackstage) portrayals of preparations for shows — such as for Kenzo and Stella McCartney — beginning before dawn.
