Motorola is allegedly planning a new 2015 version if its well-received Moto X smartphone line, with rumours and leaked specs now emerging online.
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. There’s a certain plodding inevitability about any device which carries a year number on the end of each successive iteration; it will likely come round again. But more than that, since its revival under the guidance of Google Motorola has changed itself and its products from a near non-entity into a credible competitor in the marketplace.
The Moto X and Moto G series have largely been responsible for this change, offering buyers a no-nonsense approach to Android devices; relatively low cost, near-stock Android, neat design, and a capable set of specs. This has proven a success with reviewers and consumers alike. Motorola would have to be crazy not to keep going with successor models.
Google may no longer be holding Motorola’s leash as the firm is now owned by Lenovo, but the Chinese parent company is obviously savvy enough not to mess with Motorola’s autonomy as it’s so far produced promising results. And whatever Google did at Moto HQ, the mentality appears to have stuck.
So here we are, another Moto X is on the way. What’s the score?
Some specs have appeared courtesy of stjsgadgets-portal.com, which published a screengrab of specs handed over by an “insider” source. The phone, dubbed (temporarily we assume) as the “Moto X 3rd Gen” packs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, a 5.2in AMOLED display with a QHD resolution, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor (seen inside the LG G4) and 4GB of RAM. On top of that there’s a 3,280 mAh battery and options for either 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage space.
But the camera details are pretty interesting too. This initial leak pointed to a 16MP primary camera using “Clear Pixel Technology”, along with a 5MP front-facing secondary. Now, however, another report has popped up from a different stjsgadgets source pointing to 4K video and optical image stabilisation.
There’s no information on a specific release date, however, it appears that this information comes from a test unit, leading to speculation that the device is still in development stages and probably won’t see production and launch for a few months. There’s a tentative suggestion of September, which as well as fitting the above narrative, also fits in fairly well with the launch of the previous Moto X in 2014.
