@pechanga and Millie, the Rock Climbing Cat

Hello, Instagram! Welcome to a special edition of #WeeklyFluff.
Every Thursday night, Craig Armstrong (@pechanga) checks the weather and decides on a destination for the weekend rock climb with his cat, Millie. “Millie has a customized kitty harness, a cord for her leash and locking carabiners,” says Craig, a marketing manager from Salt Lake City, Utah. “When I start taking all that gear out, she knows it well. She gets really still and lets me slide the harness onto her.” Together, they explore and climb some of the most beautiful crags, boulders and slot canyons in the southwestern United States. “There are a few summits I want to accomplish with Millie, but having really fun, stress-free weekends climbing with her, that’s what I love.”
Craig and Millie are often joined by Zac Robinson (@zacdoesmath) and his cat Kenneth, (@herekennykenny). “Zac is a longtime climbing partner, and we talked about taking our cats out on trips with us,” says Craig. “We started finding easy climbs that we could do while having the cats attached to our harnesses so they would be protected if they fell.”
Recently, Craig and Millie have tried a few slot canyons and found that they’re ideal for “catting” — the nickname Craig has given his climbing adventures with Millie. “Slot canyons are like deep gashes in the earth with 200-foot (61-meter) walls on both sides that are about eight inches (20 cm) wide at some points,” says Craig. “There’s a ton of little downclimbs, rappels, water features, little obstacles that you have to figure out. You realize two hours into it that you haven’t thought of anything else.”
