The Magic Behind Rock Trio Sunflower Bean

For their debut album, Human Ceremony, the members of Brooklyn-based trio Sunflower Bean (@sunflowerbean) were just looking to capture the magic they’d experienced over the past two years of performing live. “We wanted to grow because we had never been in a real studio situation,” says singer, bassist and part-time Yves Saint Laurent muse Julia Cumming (@juliacumming). “We had just been doing stuff at our friend’s home studio. So we did a lot more with harmonies and singing and instrumentation. We tried to push ourselves more than we had before.” They certainly succeeded. The new record is a tight-knit mix of fuzzed-out guitar riffs and psychedelic rock. Admittedly, the recording process was a far cry from how they decided to name the group: “I just thought of the words ‘Sunflower Bean,’” recalls singer/guitarist Nick Kivlen (@nickkivlen), who began playing with drummer Jacob Farber (@_j__f_) before Julia joined the band. “It kind of sounded like abracadabra or something — just a word I like. We didn’t have any other name, so it just stuck.”
