(This interview was conducted in Spanish.)
After visiting a local clinic for children with Down syndrome when she was 16, Paola Mayté Zarazúa (@la_mayte) dreamed of a society more inclusive for children with disabilities. Today, she is a child psychologist in Guadalajara, Mexico, and works with children like this 5-year-old girl, also named Paola. “She is a very happy child. She has been included at home and her relationships with other kids are wonderful,” Paola, the grown-up, says. “Someone with a disability is not necessarily sad or suffering. They are just living with a disability, living a different life. I believe that our ability to adapt to others and understand our differences is what makes humans so unique.” Her work is challenging, but for Paola, it’s all worth it. “The most rewarding moment is when you see kids doing things for themselves.”
