Classic Fortune Cookies Get a Much-Deserved Makeover
This feature is part of #MadeToCreate, a new series highlighting our community of entrepreneurs, makers and artisans on Instagram.
Ladybug Fortune Cookie Company (@lb_fortune) was dreamed up on a date. Los Angeles-based Helen Shamoyan was out for Chinese food, and the meal ended with a fortune cookie — she wished hers was covered in chocolate and coconut, her husband imagined his had M&M’s. Now, almost five years later, Helen’s gourmet fortune cookie business is booming; she sends out approximately 10,000 cookies per month. The former interior designer decorates cookies in pastel sugars, rainbow sprinkles and, yes, the chocolate and coconut she first craved. Her most extravagant cookie yet included something extra sparkly on the inside: “I added edible 3-D flowers on the outside and then put a diamond necklace inside the cookie for a wedding proposal!”
When it comes to promoting her small business, Helen says it isn’t all about good luck: “When you start something from scratch, it’s up to you to follow through and to promise yourself not to give up in the hardest of times. In the end, it’s a great journey that keeps getting better and better.”
