Photographer Ronny Sen is Capturing the End of the World

Growing up in Kolkata, Ronny Sen (@ronnysen) had no particular ambition to be anything. Before long, though, he realized he had stories to tell — and soon discovered a medium to tell them in. “I was quite drawn towards photography,” says Ronny, 29, now a professional photographer and a recipient of a 2016 Getty Images Instagram Grant. “It just became a mad obsession, like some sort of game you suddenly fall in love with.” His photo project “The End” (@whatdoestheendoftimelooklike) visualizes a post-apocalyptic world in the backdrop of chaos and resilience in the coal fields of Jharia, India. “This is a place where historically literally everyone has failed. I hope that this project can initiate a dialogue and show people a small glimpse of a possible future that is coming towards us.”

Ronny will be exhibiting his work, alongside fellow grantees Girma Berta (@gboxcreative) and Christian Rodríguez (@christian_foto), at this year’s Photoville (@photovillenyc) festival in Brooklyn, taking place September 21-25. Also on display will be photographs by Ako Salemi (@f64s125), Andrew Quilty (@andrewquilty) and Daro Sulakauri (@darosulakauri), whose work received honorable mentions from the jury of the Getty Images Instagram Grant.
