Cairo-born photographer Christina Rizk (@christinarizk) characterizes herself as a visual person, more assured when making pictures than when talking about them. “I’ve always struggled with words,” she says, “which is funny because I speak four languages.” Her earliest memory of photography’s appeal goes a long way toward explaining her calling. “I must have been 7 or 8 years old,” Christina says. “After a shower I would sit in a big armchair and my father would blow-dry my hair. I would leaf through a copy of National Geographic magazine, absorbing the stunning photos.” She recently moved from Cairo to Berlin (she is half-German, half-Egyptian) and is looking for her next story. One she might want to pursue? “With the refugee crisis here, there’s a huge need for Arabic speakers. I’ll look into that — and maybe I’ll get to document some of it, too. That would be pretty exciting.”
