Animating the Real World with Christian Bork

Super Mario dashes behind a building, the Statue of Liberty’s torch blazes, whales swim across the sky — all while Christian Bork (@juggletoon) tosses various objects into the air. “I really like Cirque du Soleil and how they combine theater and circus and movie and projections and dancing. That’s kind of what I’m going for,” says the 28-year-old Los Angeles-based animator and juggler who watches cartoons every day. Though juggling has only become a hobby in the past year, he has a full collection of rings, balls and clubs that travel wherever he and his girlfriend go. Once they’ve filmed his fancy handiwork, he creates an animation loop and inserts it into the video. The trickiest part? There’s no green screen, so he must pore over each frame, masking himself from the animation. Still, it’s worth it — he’s cartooning his world. “I hope people will be more curious and inspired. Explore. Go out there and try new things,” Christian says. “You can’t just make this with your phone.”
