Butch Locsin’s (@butch_locsin_from_la) art isn’t all smoke and mirrors. In fact, it’s about contrast and saturation — and collaboration. When the Los Angeles-based art student shows up at InstaMeets, it’s a win-win for all: he can practice his performance art and photographers have a model torn straight from a comic strip. “I always look for really good lighting situations so I can create depth for the smoke and for my character,” he says.

Butch is Filipino, but grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood and was heavily influenced by Día de los Muertos iconography. He originally created his signature sugar skull mask to celebrate the holiday with his friends; he now has 16 handmade skulls that he uses along with props like smoke bombs to create visually striking scenes. He says the juxtaposition of the skulls and his lively, dynamic movements also represent a contrast: “I’m creating life through art.”
