The Soft, Poetic Portraits of Anaïs Kugel

“I’ve realized that my work isn’t really a reflection of me at all,” says 28-year-old photographer and director Anaïs Kugel (@anaiskanaisk). “I’m anything but soft and poetic!” Originally from the south of France, her style is full of contrasts; it’s simple and eccentric, childlike and avant-garde. “It’s hard to take a step back and look at your work,” she says, “because it’s constantly changing.” But one constant is that Anaïs’ work tends to depict images of girls or women. “I think they’re passionate. I would love living with a woman to watch her at each moment of her life. I would be an irritating everyday paparazzi,” she says. “The few times I’ve ever photographed men, I’ve always ended up making them cross-dress a bit.”
