In front of the iconic Flatiron Building in New York City, Lydia Ortiz (@lydia_ortiz) and her husband Patrick Rafanan (@soybaby) designed the Instagram #FromWhereIStand2016 mural, a large-scale art installation encouraging people to talk about the issues affecting them in the US election. “We love when art provokes people to think and act — we hope this mural is doing just that,” says Lydia, who lives in Queens, New York. “We created the mural to get people to voice out what they stand for during this election.” Lydia, who was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, insists that it’s the responsibility of the American people to participate and get involved in government. “We are privileged to have freedom to speak our minds and the right to vote and when these two are put to use, we help make responsible decisions for those who are unable to,” says Lydia. “Voting empowers us as a nation.”
