Calligrapher Jose Gil Quílez’s (@josegilq) pen is mesmerizing, gliding over the page to write elegant, swooping words — Sunrise, Hustle, Lovely. “Writing relaxes me,” says Jose, a Madrid-based artist and designer. “With my videos, I hope to convey that same feeling.” Jose had a photographic memory as a child and would draw scenes from his life in a notebook he constantly carried with him. He especially liked drawing portraits, and would often note the subject’s name next to the image — a habit that eventually turned into a hand-lettering and design career. “It’s much more fun than spending hours looking for the right font on the computer,” he says. Being a freelancer can be trying, but Jose feels lucky to have turned his art into a successful business. “It requires constant work and innovation,” he says, “but you can make a little idea into your way of life.”
