“The ocean is the most magical place I have ever visited,” says Michaela Skovranova (@mishkusk), a photographer who brings ethereal underwater images back up to land. “In it, you experience weightlessness and an incredible sense of freedom of movement. It’s as close as I will probably get to experiencing space.”

Whether she’s with her camera exploring the Polynesian seas, the frigid waters of Antarctica or at home near Byron Bay in eastern Australia, Michaela carries her reverence for the ocean with her, and hopes that her photos inspire others to understand its importance and beauty. “A healthy ocean means health for each and every one of us,” she says. “Most of the oxygen in the atmosphere is generated from the ocean. It drives climate and weather. It’s incredibly powerful and important to our survival. Whether you’re landlocked or live by the coast, the ocean is what makes life possible — and it brings immense joy to our existence.” #WorldOceansDay
