Illustrator Lara Costafreda (@laracostafreda) failed her drawing class in college. But today her dreamy, confection-colored art is found in children’s books and perfume ads, on hotel murals and her own wallpaper collection. “I used to draw very well when I was a child, but nobody realized it was important, so I stopped,” says the Barcelona-based artist. When she began studying fashion design, the pencils felt familiar in her hand, but she quickly discovered drawing is like a second language — use it or lose it. “I had to learn how to draw again, and it was hard,” she says. “If I stop drawing for many days, it takes me a bit to draw fluently again.” Now, she’s getting plenty of practice, but freelance work ebbs and flows. Her advice? “Don’t panic if you don’t have many jobs during a time. Don’t stop doing what you do and the job will come to you again!”
