Kiana Underwood (@tulipinadesign) doesn’t just stop and smell the roses — she looks for foliage, fruit and other wild things to combine them with. “I believe in creating arrangements that have the movement they would have in nature — asymmetrical, wild and organic,” says Kiana, an Iranian-born, San Francisco-based floral designer who combs the city’s flower mart and her own personal garden to create one-of-a-kind bouquets. Kiana attributes her love for fresh cut flowers to her Persian upbringing — “flowers are such a huge part of our culture, they define our new year” — but making a career out of it was an unexpected choice that came after she was married and raising children. “I never took a lesson from anyone. Flowers were just part of the entertaining and people would comment and ask, ‘Can you teach me how to do it?’” Now, Kiana splits her time between weddings, local photo shoots and teaching her craft around the world, in countries including South Korea, Italy and Ukraine. “When I first started in this business, I didn’t have events. It takes a lot of hard work and patience to achieve what you want. I also believe that you are constantly evolving. It’s funny, I once wanted to be a diplomat and here I am, traveling and making so much beauty.”
