Papercutting with Calgary Artist @catfriendo

Samantha Heidinger (@catfriendo) creates her delicate cutouts with paper, a knife and a whole lot of patience at her home kitchen table. “Some of my bigger, more detailed pieces can take days,” says Samantha. “Earlier this year, I did a 9-inch by 9-inch [23-centimeter by 23-centimeter] piece that clocked in at seven straight hours of cutting!” How does she pass the time? “I listen to a lot of podcasts.”
For Samantha, the western Canadian province of Alberta has always been home — she was born in Medicine Hat and moved to Calgary for university, then never left. “I absolutely love that Calgary is really close to the Rocky Mountains,” she says. “I’m so incredibly lucky to have a daily mountain viewing while I’m driving! That crazy visibility is a really neat part of living on the flat prairies. It’s absolutely breathtaking.”
