Samsung released its Galaxy S8 Active today. The handset is available as an exclusive via AT&T and, like other Active handsets before it, the Galaxy S8 Active is designed with ACTION in mind.
Smartphones, by and large, are rather delicate. Drop an iPhone or a Galaxy S8 from your coffee table and you could wind up with ding in the handset’s chassis or, worse still, a cracked display.
Samsung being Samsung has spotted a gap in the market for users that want a more rugged handset that can withstand lives knocks and drops and filled it with its longstanding Galaxy Active phones.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, internally, is the same, more or less, when compared to the standard Galaxy S8. There are some differences, however, which are listed below:
- The Galaxy S8 Active has a slightly lower resolution display: 506ppi vs 570ppi, though the difference will hardly be noticeable.
- The Galaxy S8 Active has a larger battery: 4000mAh vs 3000mAh – and this will make a difference.
- The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active features a shatter-resistant layer of protection on top of Gorilla Glass 5; the Galaxy S8 only has Gorilla Glass 5.
- The Galaxy S8’s display is curved, while the Galaxy S8 Active’s is not.
Beyond this, the handset’s are more or less the same. They run the same software, feature identical camera setups, the same amount of RAM, and the same CPUs clocked at the same speeds.
This means performance will be more or less exactly the same on both handsets. And that performance is deadly impressive too – some of the best we’ve ever seen on an Android phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, on account of its more rugged design, is bulkier and slightly larger and heavier than the Galaxy S8. It does have all the same ports, however, so you still get USB Type C, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a single-lens camera.
Is The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active Better Than The Galaxy S8?
Yes and no. If battery life is important to you, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active’s additional 1000mAh of power will make a pretty significant difference to overall battery performance.
The display is also slightly lower resolution than on the Galaxy S8 and this, along with the larger battery, should increase overall battery performance in a noticeable manner.
And then there’s the design. Personally, I prefer the look of the Samsung Galaxy S8; I like its curved display and overall look and feel. However, the Galaxy S8 Active is designed with different users in mind – those that require a bit more protection.
If you’re a very active person, maybe a biker or a hiker, that is constantly breaking your phone, then the Galaxy S8 Active could well be just the handset for you. The phone is designed to withstand all the knocks and drops the modern world can throw at it.
You will pay more the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, however, and this is likely down to the additional materials used on its chassis, the larger battery, and the added layer of display protection.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active is also exclusive to AT&T for a limited time, so if you’re interested in picking one up, head on over to its landing page and check out all of AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S7 Active deals.
