I’ve said this dozens of times now, but the most important aspect of a smartphone isn’t its RAM or its CPU or its display. It’s not even its cameras or its storage capabilities.
The most critical technology to any mobile device is its battery. Because without the battery, it doesn’t matter how advanced your phone is. If you can’t turn it on it’s less useful than a pen and pad of paper. The ironic thing is though battery technology gets better almost every year, smartphone users only see minute gains as the years go by.
Why? Because though batteries generally becoming capable of higher capacities, our smartphones continue to demand more juice each year in order to keep their newest, power hungry components satiated.
Think of it this way: if a 2009 smartphone had a non-HD display and a 1000mAh battery, you could, say, get 10 hours of battery life out of the device before needing a recharge. But if a 2017 smartphone has an HD display, but a much larger battery, say 2000mAH, you can still only get about 10 hours of battery life out of it. Why? Because the better display and its increased pixels suck more battery power.
So, those hoping to prolong their daily battery life have little options to do so, even when the batteries in smartphones become larger.
That’s why many people choose to carry around portable power chargers–also known as power banks–with them that they can use to give their smartphones a boost throughout the day.
There’s a ton of these power banks on the market, so which should you get? These are our favorites.
AmazonBasics Portable External Battery Charger (£16.99)
AmazonBasics is Amazon’s line of cost-effective accessories and their Portable External Battery Charger is no slouch. The power bank offers versions in 5,600mAh to 16,100mAh capacities and includes two USB ports so you can charge two devices at once.
Lumsing 15000mAh Power Bank (£27.99)
This great power bank includes three ports: one Quick Charge USB port for devices that support the Quick Charge technology, one smart charge USB port that automatically adjusts the optimum output required by your device, and one USB-C port for modern smartphones. It also features a massive 15,000mAh capacity battery which will let you charge most smartphones twice.
Anker PowerCore 5000 Portable Charger (£12.99)
This awesome little power bank features a cylindrical design that measures 10cm x 3cm. Its size makes it easy to slip into your pocket. It features a 5000mAh capacity battery, which will give most smartphones a full charge. But due to its size, it only offers one USB port for charging.
Iceworks 3000mAh Portable Charger (£12.99)
This slim, portable charger is thin enough to fit in your pocket. The nice thing about it is that is has a built-in cable so you don’t need to bring your own. The cable is micro-USB, but you also get two lightning adapters for iPhones. It features a 2,000mAh battery.
Aukey 20000mAh Power Bank (£19.99)
This power bank has a massive 20,000mAh capacity. It features two USB ports, but also a charging port that can be powered by a Lightning cable–so you don’t need to carry around a separate cable to recharge the bank itself (if you are an iPhone user).
Zendure A8 QC Pro Portable Charger 26,800mAh (£72.95)
The most expensive power bank on this list by far, this bad boy features a massive 26,800mAh battery pack. It also has four USB ports for charging four devices at the same time. Those ports also support Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 if you have a phone that uses that technology.
