Amazon has the Echo Dot; a smaller, cheaper edition of its Amazon Echo smart speaker, so of course it's only reasonable that Google get in on the action with the Google Home speaker. Cue the Google Home Mini.
According to the leaky details which have also revealed the Pixel 2, Pixel XL 2, and Google Pixelbook, all of which are pegged to arrive at a big Google event on October 4, the Google Home Mini will be priced at $49, making it a good deal more affordable than the full-size Google Home. Naturally, the Google Home Mini runs on the Google Assistant AI just like its larger counterpart, in the same way that Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot run on Amazon Alexa.
Just as with Amazon's line-up, however, the Google Home Mini will not be as fully featured in order to hit that lower price point; it doesn't have an internal battery, so will need to be plugged into a wall socket at all times. On top of this, don't expect the audio quality to match the regular Google Home either.
Leaked images show the small, disc-shaped device will come in three colour options; Chalk (white), Charcoal (grey), and Coral (pink).
On top of this, from the same sources, we also have news of a new Google Daydream View VR headset being launched at the same event as well - incidentally in the same array of colour options. The 2017 edition is similar to the original model in that it is made from technical fabrics for flexibility, although naturally it has been tweaked slightly. The price has been jacked up from the original model by $20 - it will cost $99 to take home the revamped 2017 version. As yet, we don't know much about the specs or capabilities, so we don't know what's changed to make the price go up, but the new headset does still appear to be a device you will pair with a compatible phone rather than being a standalone headset with its own chip and display hardware.
Both devices are expected to launch at the October 4 event along with the Pixel phones.
