Apple has more phablets than you can shake a stick at!

If there’s one thing to be said about Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup, they are giving their customers plenty of choice. Apple currently sells five iPhone series: the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, the iPhone 7, the iPhone 6s, and the iPhone SE. Add the “Plus” models to that and Apple sells eight distinct iPhones at this time. The most advanced is the iPhone X with its all-screen design. But Apple still sells other popular large-screen iPhones, including 2016’s iPhone 7 Plus. So, how do the two compare? We took a look to find out.

iPhone X vs iPhone 7 Plus: Specs

Here’s the specs for the iPhone X:

  • Display: 5.8in display with a 2436 x 1125-pixel resolution at 458 ppi
  • Dimensions: 143.6mm x 70.9mm x 7.7mm

And here’s the specs for the iPhone 7 Plus:

  • Display: 5.5in Retina HD display with 1920x1080 resolution at 401ppi
  • Dimensions: 158.2mm x 77.9 mm x 7.3 mm

  • Memory: 3 GB RAM

  • Rear camera: 12 MP Dual Lens telephoto and wide-angle, optical image stabilisation
  • Battery: 2900mAh
  • Other: Touch ID, NFC, 3D Touch; Splash, Water and Dust Resistant

The iPhone X and the iPhone 7 Plus have the same amount of RAM (3GB), but besides that, this specs are very different. The iPhone X features Apple’s A11 Bionic chip with its Neural engine. It’s a whopping 70% faster than the A10 Fashion found in the iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone X also comes in larger storage sizes: 64GB or 256GB versus the 32GB or 128GB found in the iPhone 7 Plus.

iPhone X vs iPhone 7 Plus: Display & Design

Where the difference between these two giant phones lie is in their display and design. The resolution of the iPhone X’s screen is a breathtaking 2436 x 1125-pixels at 458 ppi edge-to-edge. Compare that to the iPhone 7 Plus’ 5.5in display with a 1920x1080-pixel resolution at 401ppi. But the iPhone X’s display is even more impressive considering it’s edge-to-edge. Further, because it’s edge-to-edge the iPhone X can actually fit a larger usable display into a footprint much smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus.

Another big difference in design is that the iPhone X lacks a Home button. The iPhone 7 Plus still has the Home button we all know and love. This means the iPhone 7 Plus also still has Touch ID. The iPhone X lacks Touch ID and replaces it with Apple’s new Face ID facial recognition system. The rest of the features of each phone’s display and design are relatively the same: both have 3D Touch displays, NFC, and both are Splash, Water and Dust Resistant.

iPhone X vs iPhone 7 Plus: Battery

The iPhone X has just a slightly smaller battery (2716 mAh) than the iPhone 7 Plus (2900 mAh). But it hardly makes a difference as far as usability is concerned between both devices. One of the major differences in the power department, however, is that the iPhone X features wireless charging–something the iPhone 7 Plus does not have. Here’s how the battery life compares between the two in Talk Time, Standby Time, Internet Use, Video Playback, and Audio Playback:

  • Talk time: iPhone X – 21 hours. iPhone 7 Plus – 21 hours.
  • Internet use: iPhone X – Up to 12 hours. iPhone 7 Plus – Up to 13 hours.
  • Video playback: iPhone X – Up to 13 hours. iPhone 7 Plus – Up to 14 hours.
  • Audio playback: iPhone X – Up to 60 hours. iPhone 7 Plus – Up to 60 hours.

iPhone X vs iPhone 7 Plus: Camera

Where cameras are concerned, the iPhone X and iPhone 7 Plus are fairly identical. Both feature a 12MP wide-angle and telephoto dual lens rear camera that offers optical image stabilisation and optical zoom. However, the iPhone X features dual optical image stabilisation, whereas the iPhone 7 Plus only considers single optical image stabilisation Both also feature the same front camera, a 7 MP sensor that also records 1080p HD video. However, the iPhone X’s front camera has a few more tricks. It can use Apple’s new Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting (beta), and Animoji features of iOS 11. The iPhone 7 Plus’s camera doesn’t have access to those.

iPhone X vs iPhone 7 Plus: Cost & Verdict

Unlocked the 5.5in iPhone 7 Plus will cost £669 (32GB) and £769 (128GB). The 5.8in iPhone X will cost £999 (64GB) and £1149 (256GB). That £330 and £380 premium for the iPhone X does get you a massive amount of more stuff including a bigger display and a sexy new design, wireless charger, a 70% faster processor, and more storage. If that appeals to you, the answer of which to buy is clear.
