Amazon's had a think about how it can improve on a device millions of people already love just the way it is - the Kindle - and the result is the newly announced second-gen Kindle Oasis.
So what's new about this updated model? Well one very sensible addition is full waterproofing. The new Kindle Oasis is IP67 water resistant certified, with Amazon also saying it has tested it in typical scenarios were users read their Kindles - in the hot tub and in the bath, as well as of course being safe poolside and at the beach.
The screen is also bigger - an inch bigger. The old Kindle was a 6in display and the Oasis ups that to 7in, but the pixel density (300ppi) is the same. It's not just the enlarged size that improves readability though, Amazon has added three times as many LEDs as the Kindle Paperwhite, so illumination is vastly enhanced.
The aluminium and plastic bodywork has been kept at the 3.4mm thickness of the previous model, but Amazon has upped the battery capacity. Amazon's also incorporated more of its services by default, Audiable is now built-in for audiobooks, though to make use of this you'll need Bluetooth headphones or speaksers as there's no 3.5mm audio jack or built-in speaker on the device.
Storage options include 8GB and 32GB models. The price starts at $250 for the 8GB, and goes up to $300 for the 32GB. There is also a 4G-enabled edition which only comes in 32GB capacity. October 31 will see the Kindle Oasis land in the US. So far Amazon has kept quiet about European availability and pricing.
