Goblins and Ghouls You’ll Want to Take Home: Mab Graves’ Impish Monsters Defang Darkness

Mab Graves’ (@mabgraves) mischievous goblins and ghouls look more like your pouty kid sister than scary monsters. “We have enough darkness. People are thirsty for hope,” says Mab, who co-owns Indianapolis’ Monster Gallery. “I never paint negative or sad.” A shy child who didn’t speak until she was 3 years old, Mab’s been drawing since she could “grip a crayon,” and the imps tussling in her sketchbooks have always done plenty of talking (and troublemaking) for her — especially during #MabsDrawlloweenClub, her annual spooks-inspired, daily drawing challenge.

With each brace-face ghoul eyeing candy apples, bratty witch sulking over hand-me-down familiars and lagoon creature breaking dad’s no-makeup rule, Mab defangs darkness. “Even in a sad, dark subject, you can find the humanity, humor or sweetness,” she says.
