How The Google Pixel 2 Squeeze Feature Works

With the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, you can squeeze the handset to activate Google Assistant – this is how Google's Active Edge works

The Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL are now both official and, as expected, they’re pretty sizeable updates over what came before. Google has updated every aspect of the phone from the design and specs, to the camera and software.

The biggest updates for most, however, will be to do with the camera and the display tech; the Pixel 2 XL features a 6in P-OLED panel with a  1,440 x 2,880px resolution at 538ppi. That’s quite an improvement on what came before.

But the fun doesn’t stop there; no, Google has also seriously updated the already-excellent camera that was found in last year’s Pixel phones, adding in a raft of new features and improvements.

Here’s the official line via Google on what you can expect from the Pixel 2’s camera department:

"You can also take high-quality portrait shots with the perfect background blurs, from both the front and back camera. New motion photos capture a few seconds of video around the shot so you can relive the moment around the picture. The Pixel 2 camera is powered by our computational photography and machine learning (ML) capabilities which make all these great features easy, fun and fast for you to use," said Google.

It added: "We’ve made video capture better too by combining both optical and electronic video stabilization to give you remarkably smooth video, even when you’re on the move. All of these great features mean you can take the best photos and videos with Pixel 2. And don’t just take our word for it—independent camera experts DxOMark have rated the Pixel 2 camera as the best camera of any smartphone, with an unprecedented score of 98. To top it off, we’re once again providing free unlimited storage for all of the photos and videos were taken on your Pixel.”

There is a lot of parity between the phones too; both feature the same CPU, RAM, Camera Tech, and Software. The only difference, besides price, is the display tech, the size and dimensions, and the battery cell.

So what about the squeezing malarkey? How’s that work?

Pretty simple, really: to activate Google Assistant, even when the phone is in idle and the screen is switched off, simply squeeze the handset’s chassis and issue your command.

Google calls this feature Active Edge and when you squeeze the frame there’s a neat little animation that pops on the home screen to let you know the handset has registered it.

Google’s really drilling-down on Assistant in 2017/18, making it a central component of how its products work and integrate with the world around them.

The squeeze-to-activate function was inspired by HTC, the company’s existent phones support this feature, though Google has handily nabbed it for its Pixel phones where it is likely to get a lot more usage.

What do you think? Is this a useful feature?
