Apple's 2018 iPad Pro will feature the firm's TrueDepth camera and face scanning capabilities

Apple's 2018 line of iPad Pro tablets will integrate the TrueDepth camera and Face ID 3D laser face-scanning and recognition technology which the firm has debuted aboard the just launched iPhone X.

As usual for Apple-related predictions, the word comes from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a near perfect track record for such predictions. In a note to investors, Kuo said the inclusion of this new tech should improve the competitiveness of Apple's tablet range. However, he added that he only expected the feature to come to the Pro range; don't expect to see regular iPads with face scanners next year.

As Apple established a new precedent by launching the latest iPad Pro in June this year, it is possible that the same will happen in 2018, meaning the wait will not be too long for a TrueDepth-equipped iPad Pro. Kuo also reiterated his belief that now Apple has pioneered this technology we will see more Android OEMs scrambling to imitate it. He believes it will largely replace the race to integrate fingerprint scanners under the display glass  - a goal which so far has remained elusive to all OEMs. However, he also added that he expects the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to feature an in-display fingerprint reader, which may make it the first firm to do so.
