The iPhone 8 Plus is Apple’s newest flagship (well, at least until the iPhone X comes out), and it’s also probably one of the last phablet iPhones with big bezels. The iPhone 8 Plus is competing against a ton of other Android phablets this year–the least of not which is the OnePlus 5.
From a cursory look of things, the two phones are very similar: they both have 5.5in displays with the same resolution and big, honking “forehead” and “chin” bezels. But there are several differences between the devices. So let’s take a look to find out how each compares.
iPhone 8 Plus vs OnePlus 5: Specs
Here are the specs for the iPhone 8 Plus:

- Memory: 3 GB RAM
- Processors: A11 Bionic
- Front camera: 7 MP
- Rear camera: 12 MP Dual Lens telephoto and wide-angle

And here’s the specs for the OnePlus 5:
- Display: 5.5in display with a 1920x1080 resolution at 401ppi
- Dimensions: 152.7mm x 74.7 mm x 7.25mm
- Weight: 153 grams
- Storage: 64 or 128GB
- Memory: 6 GB of 8GB RAM
- Processors: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
- Front camera: 16 MP
- Rear camera: Dual camera 16 MP wide-angle lens and 20 MP telephoto lens.
- Battery: 3300 mAh
Both phones come in 64GB storage options, but their upper tier storage capabilities are different. The OnePlus 5 maxes out at 128GB, while the iPhone 8 Plus maxes out at 256GB. That 256GB option is great, but for most people, 128GB is probably the sweet spot–and the iPhone 8 Plus doesn’t offer that.
Moving on to RAM, the OnePlus 5 DESTROYS the iPhone 8 Plus. The 64GB model comes with a whopping 6GB of RAM and the 128GB model comes with a crazy 8GBs! That compares to the 3GB in the iPhone 8 Plus. But truthfully, most of the time your phone isn’t going to be using all of its RAM–so speed benefits are debatable. What your phone will be using all of the time is its CPU–and there the iPhone OWNS it. Its A11 Bionic chip with neural engine leaves the OnePlus 5’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 looking like it’s stuck in the 20th century.
iPhone 8 Plus vs OnePlus 5: Display & Design
Both phones are relatively sleek with a solid build, but the OnePlus 5 comes in both thinner and 25% lighter than the iPhone 8 Plus. Because of their bezels, both phones also sport their fingerprint readers on the front of the device–which is very welcome. Both also have nearly identical displays. Each is 5.5 inches with a 1920x1080 resolution at 401ppi.
iPhone 8 Plus vs OnePlus 5: Battery
The OnePlus 5 has the bigger battery at 3300 mAh, but each phone should last around the same amount of time in average daily use. Where the iPhone 8 Plus clearly wins it is it offers wireless charging. Buh-bye cables!
iPhone 8 Plus vs OnePlus 5: Cameras
The OnePlus 5 strikes back when you get to the camera department. Its front camera is an astounding 16MP. That’s over double the megapixels found in the iPhone 8 Plus’s front camera. When you get to the rear cameras, both feature dual lens systems. The iPhone 8 Plus features a telephoto and wide-angle lens that is 12MP each. However, the OnePlus 5’s dual lens system offers a 16MP wide-angle lens and 20 MP telephoto lens. OnePlus really wanted to pack the best cameras into their device that they could, and users will see the difference.
iPhone 8 Plus vs OnePlus 5: Cost
Unlocked the iPhone 8 Plus will cost £799 (64GB) and £949 (256GB). The OnePlus 5 will cost £449 (64GB) or £499 (128GB). At £350 and £450 cheaper than the iPhone 8 Plus, it’s INSANELY hard not to see just how great of a deal the OnePlus 5 is.
The price is ridiculous considering the screens are nearly identical, it has two to almost three times the RAM (depending on model) and offers much higher megapixel lenses in its dual lens setup. I mean, if you’re an iPhone fan, there’s only one phone to get here. But if you’re not married to Android or iOS, at the price it's being offered for, the OnePlus 5 is hard to say no to.
