iPhone 8 vs Google Pixel 2: Specs

When it comes to CPU, the iPhone 8 roasts the Pixel 2 in processing power. That’s because it features the new A11 Bionic chip with its neural engine. To give you an idea about how fast the chip is–it’s 70% faster than last year’s A10 Fusion, and that older chip already smoked the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 found in the Pixel 2. But the Pixel 2 does have one advantage: it packs 50% more RAM with 4GB of memory versus the iPhone 8’s paltry 2GB.
As for storage, both phones come in 64GB versions, but their upper tiers differ. The iPhone 8 offers a 256GB model whereas the Google Pixel 2 maxes out at 128GB of storage. Honestly, most people probably don’t need more than 128GB unless they shoot A LOT of 4K video.
iPhone 8 vs Google Pixel 2: Display & Design
The iPhone 8 offers a smaller 4.7in display than the 5in screen found on the Pixel 2. Whether that’s a benefit or a drawback depends on your personal preference. However, the Pixel 2’s screen wins in regards to resolution offering 1920 x 1080 resolution at 441ppi compared to the iPhone 8’s 1334x750 resolution at 326ppi.
One thing I don’t like about the Pixel 2 is that, though it has smaller bezels, it moved the fingerprint reader to the back of the phone. It’s awkwardly placed for such a commonly used feature. From a UX perspective, the iPhone 8’s front-facing TouchID wins.
iPhone 8 vs Google Pixel 2: Battery
The Pixel 2 has a much bigger battery at 2700 mAh, versus the 1821 mAh found in the iPhone 8. Some of the larger battery is going to go to keeping the larger, higher resolution display powered, however, so don’t expect to see too much of a battery life boost over the iPhone. In the power department, the iPhone 8 actually wins too. That’s because it offers wireless charging–it stinks that Google didn’t include the feature on the Pixel 2.
iPhone 8 vs Google Pixel 2: Cameras
The selfie cam on the Pixel 2 is 8MP versus the 7MP sensor found in the iPhone 8. That’s better, but most people won’t notice the difference. Truth be told, most people probably won’t notice much of a difference in the rear cameras either. What really sticks is neither of these phones offer dual lens systems. Both are single lens with the Pixel 2 offering 12.2MP and the iPhone 8 offering 12MP. Both also shoot 4K video. But the Pixel 2 wins because it’s the only one to offer optical, in addition to digital, image stabilization.
iPhone 8 vs Google Pixel 2: Cost
Unlocked the 4.7in iPhone 8 will cost £699 (64GB) and £849 (256GB). For the Google Pixel 2 you’ll pay £629 for the 64GB model and £729 for the 128GB model. As for which to get: it’s a really tough call. The Pixel 2 has the better display and camera. The iPhone 8 has the much better processor. Your choice may just come down to whether you like Android or iOS better.
Personally, I’d go with the Google Pixel 2 every day of the week and twice on a Sunday, but that’s me. I like getting more for my money and when you’re looking at two very expensive phones, you gotta go where the value is.
The Pixel 2 has superior specs in many departments and it also has a truly exceptional camera. Plus, you’ll get Android updates as soon as they’re released, which, in the Android space, is quite something, indeed.
