Nintendo's already been tapping that rich vein of nostalgia in recent years with a series of "Classic Edition" consoles; re-releases of consoles from the firm's heydey in newly re-designed and compact form factors. It started with the NES Classic Edition and followed with the SNES Classic Edition, and it's understood from patent documentation that Nintendo is working on a N64 Classic Edition as well.
But now Nintendo might be about to do the same for its handheld Game Boy brand, at least if a new trademark filing by the firm is any indication.
A trademark Twitter bot has caught attention by published a filing from Nintendo which displays an image of the original Game Boy hand held. I'm pretty sure I've still got the original in a cupboard somewhere!
The trademark was filed on September 15 2017, though it doesn't explicitly mention the Game Boy Classic Edition moniker we might expect. It actually details several pieces of tie-in branded merchandise; wallets, bags, pouches, clothing, umbrellas, and so on.
However, bot's tweet shows that the filing also covers storage and programs for “home video game machines” and “portable electronic game machines.”
It may be some time before we find out what's going on with Nintendo's plans, however. We heard about the N64 Classic Edition in July this year, and it was a very compelling set of evidence that has us virtually certain it will appear sooner or later...it just seems that it will be later. Nintendo is still selling SNES Classic Edition consoles like the proverbial hot cakes, but it's expected that once the firm has ceased production of that model it will briefly bring back the NES Classic Edition for Summer 2018.
The long and the short of it seems to be that with the SNES and NES Classic Editions doing quite well, Nintendo appears to be taking its sweet time as far as new models are concerned, though they are indeed planned. It could be we have to wait until this time next year before the N64 Classic Edition even surfaces, let alone a possible Game Boy Classic Edition...unless we get both at once? It is plausible that Nintendo could revive its portable brand as a Classic Edition at the same time as the N64 Classic Edition console lands, as it's unlikely that they would cannibalise each other's sales.
