Samsung Galaxy S9 To Feature 3D Face Scanner

Samsung may be copying the Apple iPhone X with a 3D face scanner on the Galaxy S9

Although the rumours say the Galaxy Note 9 will feature a fingerprint scanner embedded beneath the display glass, Samsung may be copying Apple for the Samsung Galaxy S9 expected in Q1 2018; the handset could feature a face scanner, according to new reports.

The phone is already rumoured with next-gen 7nm processor options for either Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 or Samsung's own Exynos 9810, plus a dual-camera; probably a tweaked version of what launched on the Galaxy Note 8. However, according to Chinese leakster and blogger Ice Universe, who has been accurate on various pre-launch details in the past, sources in the supply chain whisper of a "3D sensor front camera" for the device.

This sounds remarkably similar to Apple's TrueDepth 3D face scanning camera used in its Face ID biometric security; this allows users to unlock the phone with facial recognition rather than Touch ID fingerprint scanning, which is gone on the iPhone X. Apple has pioneered this technology and is ahead of the competition, in much the same way that Samung is market leader when it comes to the edge-to-edge OLED displays of the kind Apple has procured (from Samsung, no less) for the iPhone X.

However, Apple, despite its lead position and entrenchment in Asia's manufacturing and supply industries, is having a lot of trouble with this 3D scanning technology. According to multiple reports, it is the reason why Apple iPhone X handsets are not yet on the market and why, when they do arrive, they will be in short supply until 2018. That's apparently due to a component supply bottleneck; allegedly the 3D scanner requires two vital components working together, one of which is only being produced in the tens of thousands per day, a rate that isn't in keeping with Apple's typical production levels to supply the millions of demanding customers.

And for the iPhone X, demand is higher than ever. KGI Securities analys Ming-Chi Kuo estimates pre-orders in the region of 40-50 million, while others also believe the iPhone X  will represent the first "supercycle" iPhone since the iPhone 6. Indeed, a report today suggests the iPhone 7 is outselling the iPhone 8, reportedly consumers are simply waiting for the iPhone X before they upgrade. The same report says network retailers are also not pushing iPhone 8 promotion very hard, perhaps hoping to make more sales on the iPhone X too.
