I’ve been testing the iPhone 8 for about a week now. If you read my blog post from last week, you’ll know that I’m not particularly enamoured by the handset.
There are many reasons for this, but the main one is that Apple is charging more for a phone that is, more or less, identical to last year’s model.
I’ve wracked my brains trying to find out why Apple would do this but I cannot find any real reason why. I know it has a better chipset inside it, but that’s not worth the price hike in place here.
Neither is the new glass back panel nor the water-proofing that has now FINALLY been added.
Basically, I don’t know why it costs more. I guess it’s because Apple wants to make more money, so it can do bigger and better keynote events about how it's changing the world for the better (with phones and stuff).
Either way, your guess is as good as mine.
So… what about them random restarts?
Well, ever since I’ve had the phone, it’s had this habit – usually when it’s in my pocket – of just shutting down. There’s no warning sign, it just drops dead, and the only way to bring it back is to power it up again.
But what's really annoying is that it likes to do it when you assume it's there, doing what it's supposed to do.
I’ve missed several important phone calls because of this and, even with two additional iOS updates, the problem is still there. It happened just a minute ago, which is why I decided to sit down and write this.
The battery life is also squiffy as hell; one day it’ll be fine, the next it’ll need to go into Low Power Mode by 3 pm. Again, I have no idea what’s causing this or whether or not it is just my phone or iPhones in general.
Normally, I'd reach out to company reps about something like this. But that's not how it works with Apple. Why? Simple: I’d be more likely to get an email back from Elvis than those guys.
But the thing that really gets me about these issues is that, in the two weeks I’ve had the phone, Apple has issued two iOS 11 updates.
You’d think at least one of them would have fixed this? Worse still, the last one appears to have frittered my iPhone 8’s battery performance.
