Samsung has already confirmed Android Oreo will arrive on the Galaxy S7 series and is currently in the process of beta testing a build for the Galaxy S8 series, but new information has come to light which strongly suggests the Galaxy S6 will also be given an Oreo build.
A post on Reddit details how user CyberConCoder spoke to four different Samsung support agents, all of whom appear to confirm the Galaxy S6 is planned for an Oreo update. The post provided screenshot evidence of these conversations. The line from each support agent is consistent too; each says that Oreo will arrive on the Galaxy S6 but cannot give an expected timeframe. In all likelihood that'll be because there probably isn't one just at the moment, Samsung probably intends to do it once the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7 series are dealt with, and there's still plenty left to do on that front.
One of the support agents also said that his supervisor confirmed the details.
To date, Samsung's support of Android updates has not been the best, and it has never supported a phone for as long as three years before. There could be a competitive cause here though, given that Apple already supports its phones for quite a long time, and Google has recently upped its support for the Pixel 2 from two years to three years. Perhaps Samsung wants to keep up with these rivals, or alternatively Google could be pushing OEMs from behind the scenes as it wants to address Android fragmentation - Google is already pushing Project Treble in a bid to streamline the update process for future Android builds, so it is at the forefront of the firm's plans right now.
