Reports out of Korea are now claiming that as well as a Galaxy S9 flagship in 2018, Samsung is also prepping a Galaxy S9+ and a Galaxy S9 Mini. The Plus model isn't such a surprise considering the firm's MO for the last few years, in fact we were expecting an S9 Plus already. The Mini, however, is an interesting prospect; a Galaxy S8 Mini was rumoured for this year, but didn't materialise, but perhaps Samsung simply postponed its plans into the next generation.
Business Korea cites unnamed sources who claim Samsung will release a Galaxy S9 Mini model with a 4in display, it'll apparently arrive alongside both a regular Galaxy S9 and a Galaxy S9+ in March 2018. The sources add that just like the other two models, the Mini will have curved display edges, which will mean it likely uses the same flexible Super AMOLED tech. What's not clear, however, is whether it will maintain the 18:9 aspect ratio as an edge-to-edge Infinity Display.
There are no other spec details at present. In the past when Samsung did have "Mini" versions of its flagships they tended to not have flagship-level specs, it was more of a branding exercise - but that lack of premium specs meant the Mini phones were generally not successful in terms of sales, a possible explanation as to why Samsung dropped the idea. Other firms such as Sony have shown that Mini (in Sony's case "Compact") editions of flagship brands with the same high-end specs as the flagship seem to have healthy demand.
So we have to hope that Samsung will approach this properly if it does indeed go ahead. There seems to be little point in reviving the Samsung Galaxy Mini for the S9 series if it is going to have a lower spec; it'll only really work if it's a compact version of the flagship.
