Why Did OnePlus Launch OnePlus 5T WITHOUT Android Oreo?

Launching a handset this late in the year, without Android Oreo does not make any sense whatsoever…

OnePlus 5T

When you launch a new Android phone inside Q4, you make sure it is running the latest build of Android. This is just par for the course when you’re in the phone-making business. So what the hell happened with the OnePlus 5T?

For some reason – OnePlus has not said – the OnePlus 5T will ship with Android Nougat (7.1.1). Not Oreo, the latest build. Worse still, the company has now confirmed that the update will not be landing until early 2018.

This makes no sense. None at all; in fact, it kind of comes across as lazy. I mean, even Essential is outfitting its PH-1 phone with Android Oreo – and that company is REALLY new to Android space. Plus, the Essential Phone is now DIRT cheap too, so perhaps you should be looking at that handset?

Even Nokia, well, HMD, has managed to get Android Oreo out to some of its devices. Ditto Samsung – and Samsung truly SUCKS at Android updates.

Does OnePlus think its users don’t care about running the latest build of Android? Perhaps – it doesn’t seem to have hurt Samsung all that much. I am still pretty angry about this, though, as the software on a phone, a new phone, should be representative of what’s happening when it is released.

Android Nougat is Google’s 2016 software; it has no place in a flagship launched right at the end of 2017. OnePlus should have realised this and spent some money on getting it sorted prior to launching this “new” phone.

The company’s co-founder even said, when asked WHY release the OnePlus 5T, that OnePlus doesn’t like its users going without the new features and hardware. OK, I get this. But what the hell happened to Android Oreo? That’s new, right?

What makes all of this even more bizarre is that the OnePlus 5T runs the same specs, more or less, as the OnePlus 5, and the OnePlus 5 Android Oreo Beta Program kicks off later this month. So why the delay on the 5T?

It makes no sense… and, worse still, comes off as sloppy.
