A previously tipped new flagship from HTC, currently being presumed as the HTC U12, has made an appearance at a trade expo in the firm's home region of Taiwan.
It previously emerged that HTC would not showcase a new flagship at MWC 2018 this February, however, the phone-maker definitely has something in the works for subsequent release.
At a local carrier event promoting 5G, HTC showed off its latest in-development and previously unseed and unannounced flagship. It was, of course, wearing plenty of protective decoy layers to prevent prying eyes from seeing too much, so we don't actually have a very good idea of the design.
Evan Blass, aka @evleaks on Twitter, is outright calling this the HTC U12, and with his connections he'd be one to know such details. The working codename inside HTC is the HTC Imagine.
What we can discern from this wrapped-up prototype, is that it has a massive near-edge-toedge display, probably an 18:9 aspect ratio setup. It may in this case be more of a successor to the HTC U11+ with its 6in 18:9 screen. The phone was also demoed with 5G capability, downloading at speeds of nearly 1GB per second, which sounds suspiciously like the kind of rapid connectivity poised to emerge with Qualcomm's next-gen Snapdragon 845 processor, which features a 1.2GBps capable Qualcomm X20 LTE modem.
Taiwanese publication Sogi was in attendance and reports that HTC confirmed the phone would launch this year, but did not say when, and would not reveal a name.
