2018 looks to be really interesting in the battle between the biggest smartphone makers. Samsung is expected to unveil its new Samsung Galaxy S9 flagship soon and everyone wants to know how it compares to the iPhone X. Though the S9 isn’t out yet, we’ve got a good idea of what its specs will be thanks to a number of leaks. And of course, we are well aware of what the iPhone X is like since it’s been out since late last year. Given that the Galaxy S9 will be a brand spanking new and the iPhone X is already almost 5 months old (Apple should be releasing its iPhone X Series 2 flagship in September) it might be assumed that the Galaxy S9 will be better in every way. But is that really the case? Let’s take a look to find out.
iPhone X vs Rumored Samsung Galaxy S9: Specs
Here’s the specs for the iPhone X:
- Display: 5.8in display with a 1125 x 2436-pixel resolution at 463ppi, 3D Touch enabled
- Storage: 64 or 256GB
- Memory: 3 GB RAM
- Processors: A11 bionic
- Front camera: 7 MP
- Rear camera: 12 MP dual lens
- Battery: 2716 mAh
- Biometrics: Face ID
And here’s the specs for the Galaxy S9:
- Display: 5.8in or 6.2in display with a 1440 x 2960-pixel resolution at 549ppi
- Storage: 64 plus support for microSD cards up to 400GB
- Memory: 4 or 6 GB RAM
- Processors: Samsung Exynos 9 Octa 9810
- Front camera: 8 MP
- Rear camera: 12 MP dual pixel
- Battery life: 3000 mAh
- Biometrics: rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, front-facing iris scanner
One win in the S9’s corner is the storage. Yes both the iPhone X and the S9 feature a 64GB model, if you want any higher than that on the iPhone you’ll need to go with the super expensive 256GB model. Galaxy S9 owners have the option of simply increasing their storage by another 400GB thanks to the microSD card slot. The S9 also trounces the iPhone X when it comes to RAM, with 4 or 6GB–that’s compared to the X’s 3GB.
As for processors, the raw specs don’t tell an easy story. The iPhone gets that INSANELY powerful A11 bionic chip, while the S9 gets Samsung’s own Exynos 9 Octa 9810. Of course, as Apple knows, raw specs don’t solely make a fast phone. It also depends how the software can utilize the RAM and processors. So we’re very interested in seeing real-world benchmark tests between the two devices.
iPhone X vs Rumored Samsung Galaxy S9: Display and Design
The S9 and iPhone X have 5.8in displays (the S9+ has a 6.2in display). So which is better? technically, the S9 is higher resolution, according to rumors. Does that mean it’s the better display? We’ll have to see when the phone is officially revealed. But just by the raw specs, the S9 does have the edge over the X. That being said, the S9 doesn’t have any kind of pressure-sensitive 3D Touch display like the X does.
As for design, both are edge-to-edge displays with glass bodies. However, the iPhone X features a stainless steel frame whereas the S9 reportedly has a cheaper aluminum one. It’s that stainless steel that might make the iPhone X the better-looking phone.
iPhone X vs Rumored Samsung Galaxy S9: Biometrics and Battery
You can’t talk about smartphones in 2018 without talking about biometrics. On the iPhone X you’ve got FaceID–and no fingerprint sensor. Now, Face ID works REALLY well, but some people just love the fingerprint sensor. If that’s you, you’ll be more interested in the S9, which still has a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the phone. The S9 also has an iris scanner–but don’t expect that to work as well as Apple’s Face ID.
But when we get to the battery, the S9’s 3000 mAh battery isn’t much better than the iPhone’s 2716 mAh pack. However—just as with RAM and processors—how long a phone’s battery lasts has as much to do with the size of the pack as it does with how well the software works to conserve power. For now, we can’t accurately judge how each battery life compares in real-world usage.
iPhone X vs Rumored Samsung Galaxy S9: Cameras
The S9 wins on the selfie camera front. It’s got the bigger sensor at 8MP, versus the X’s 7MP sensor. However, the S9’s rear camera can’t touch the one found on the iPhone X. That’s because the S9 is still rumored to use a dual pixel, but NOT dual lens, system. In other words, the iPhone X’s rear camera is twice as good since it has both a wide angle and telephoto lens with optical zoom.
iPhone X vs Rumored Samsung Galaxy S9: Verdict
It goes without saying now that our phone choices are usually dictated by the software ecosystem we like best: Android or iOS. As with last time when I reviewed their previous flagships I don’t think the changes Samsung is rumored to be making to the S9 series will be enough to make iPhone fans switch, but if you’re on the fence and don’t really care about the OS you use, the Samsung S9 series isn’t a bad choice to switch to if you want a top of the line flagship without that divisive notch. As always, however, we’ll need to reserve true judgment on the phones until the S9 is officially released.
