Apple focused on education and new iPad features

Apple usually hosts a spring event where it announces updates to some of its less important product lines.

In the past, those spring events have always taken place at or near Apple’s campus. However, this spring event was different; Apple chose to host it at the Lane Tech College Prep High School in Chicago.

This was the first big tip-off that Apple’s 2018 spring event would have a heavy focus on education. And that’s exactly what we got; updates to multiple Apple products that make them more competitive in the education market.

Here’s everything Apple unveiled at its 2018 spring event.

New 9.7in iPad With Apple Pencil Support

The biggest announcement from today’s event is the introduction of a new 9.7in iPad that supports the Apple Pencil. This is the first iPad outside the “iPad Pro” lineup that supports Apple’s stylus. Besides the Apple Pencil support, the new 9.7in iPad also features 32GB of storage and an upgrade A10 processor, which is 40% faster than the A9 processor found in the previous iPad. The new 9.7in iPad with Apple Pencil support will cost $329 for consumers and $299 for schools. The Apple Pencil is sold separately for $99.

New iWork Apps

To go along with the new iPad with Apple Pencil support, Apple is releasing new versions of its iWorks apps for iOS. The big new feature of the new versions are–you guessed it–support for the Apple Pencil. The Pencil support will allow users to add drawings and notes to iWork documents simply by scribbling on the screen of their iPad.

200GB Of Free iCloud Storage

One of the best announcements today had to be this one: students will now get 200GB of free iCloud storage. That is a MASSIVE boost to the free 5GB everyone else gets. However, the free 200GB of iCloud storage won’t be available to just any students. Your school will need to be a part of Apple’s managed Apple ID program. In other words, you need to be a legit, current student at a school to get this terrific deal.

New Education Apps

Apple has introduced a few new education-focused apps and updates today. The first is Schoolwork, an application that allows to create assignments and distribute handouts digitally to students. The app will debut in June–in time for autumn’s school year. Apple also announced it’s bringing its Classroom app to the Mac. The app was previously only available for iPad. It allows teachers to guide students through lessons on iPads–and now Macs.
