Here’s Everything That’s New In iOS 12.1.1

New FaceTime features + iPhone XR gets better haptic support!

Apple this week released one of its biggest updates to iOS since releasing iOS 12 in September. iOS 12.1.1 introduces some redesigns and subtle tweaks for apps that make the operating system that runs on Apple’s iPhones and iPads better.

The new features include pretty significant updates to Apple’s FaceTime app, wider support for eSims, and, you guessed it, new emoji.

Apple also introduced macOS Mojave 10.14.2, tvOS 12.1.1, and HomePod 12.1.1 updates today–but iOS 12.1.1 is by far the most notable. Here are the biggest changes.

iOS 12.1.1: Better Haptic Touch Support For iPhone XR

One of the bummers about the new iPhone XR is that it lacks a 3D Touch display. Apple made this choice because the Liquid Retina display of the XR didn’t leave room for another panel tech. So instead of offering 3D Touch on the XR, Apple gave it Haptic Touch–that is, a long press and hold on certain UI elements will cause the Haptic Engine inside the XR to bump the phone, mimicking (mostly) the feel of 3D Touch.

But Haptic Touch elements ver VERY limited in iOS 12. With the update today, Haptic Touch has been expanded to work on Notification previews on the iPhone XR.

iOS 12.1.1: Better eSim Support

The iPhone XS and XR support eSims, or electronic sims. That in addition to a physical sim as well. This means those iPhones can support two sims–one physical, one electronic.

Today’s update adds support for eSims from many more carriers.

iOS 12.1.1: Live Photo Capture During FaceTime Calls

Today’s update also allows users to capture a Live Photo during a FaceTime call. This only works for one-to-one calls and not group calls. But now this means that you can capture a moving picture of the person you are talking to and save it to your photo library. And yep, they’ll be alerted you took a Live Photo.

iOS 12.1.1: A Better FaceTime UI

The FaceTime app also got a reworked bottom navigation bar that now offers quick access buttons for muting a call and flipping the camera. This is a much better interface than the old “three dot” FaceTime interface. And sliding up on the new bottom bar also brings up additional options with participant you are having a conversation with.

iOS 12.1.1: Bug fixes include:

  • iOS 12.1.1 also includes the following bug fixes:
  • Fixes an issue where Face ID may temporarily become unavailable
  • Addresses an issue that prevented visual voicemail from downloading for some customers
  • Fixes an issue in Messages that could prevent predictive text suggestions when typing on the Chinese or Japanese keyboards
  • Addresses an issue that could prevent Voice Memos recordings from uploading to iCloud
  • Fixes an issue where time zones may not have updated automatically

iOS 12.1.1 can be download on your iPhone and iPad now.
