Naughty Apple Caught Fibbing About iPhone X Screen Size

It's actually 5.6875 inches, we're told

When Apple launched the iPhone X last year, it was marketed as the company's answer to the 'big-screen' revolution that was sweeping the market. Apple proudly boasted that the display was a massive 5.8-inches, a huge jump on previous phones in its iPhone range.

The thing is, Apple was telling porky pies – at least, that's what a new lawsuit is stating. The suit was recently filed in the US and claims that such statements were totally false, and that the iPhone X – and this year's XS and XS Max – fall short of Apple's bragging in terms of both overall screen size and resolution.

Two plaintiffs filed the suit in the US District Court of Northern California, alleging that Apple falsely advertised both the screen sizes and pixel counts of the iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, which means the company has misled buyers who were looking for the best 'big-screen' option on the market.

In the class-action suit – which runs for a whopping 55 pages and must have been a real hoot to read – it is alleged that by counting non-screen areas like the notch and corners, Apple arrived at its all-important 5.8-inch claim. The plaintiffs say that the iPhone X's screen is actually around 5.6875 inches in size – not much of a difference, but a difference all the same.

The plaintiffs didn't stop there, however; they all claim that the iPhone X has a lower screen resolution than is advertised. Apple says that it has a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels, but that count doesn't contain true pixels with red, green and blue subpixels in each pixel.

The iPhone X only has two subpixels per pixel, which means that Apple's figures are all wrong. The same suit therefore claims that the iPhone 8 Plus has a "higher-quality" display than the more recent iPhone X, due to the fact that the Plus uses LCD while the iPhone X uses OLED.

What does this suit mean for the consumer? Not much, we'd argue. If Apple is found to be at fault then it may have to issue a statement or change its advertising, but these differences are, in reality, absolutely tiny and have very little impact on the usublity of the phone itself. It could be that the court decides that, as most mobile firms measure from corner to corner, Apple is simply following the format of the rest of the industry.
