The Huawei P30 And P30 Pro Are Lacking 2019's Headline Feature

To notch or not to notch?

Last week, case maker Olixar leaked Samsung's Galaxy S10, and now the company has pulled the same trick with Huawei's upcoming P30 and P30 Pro handsets – arguably the Chinese firm's flagship products in 2019.

Our first look at these devices comes via Olixar's promotional imagery (thanks, Mobile Fun) for its range of cases for the two devices, both of which boast multiple rear-facing cameras. The P30 has three, while the P30 Pro has four different sensors on the back.

The other big news is that Huawei hasn't used the 'hole-punch' screen design as seen on the recently-announced Nova 4, and has instead opted for a 'tear-drop' notch at the very top of the display. It is believed this is because Samsung is the only company to have perfected this approach with OLED panels – dubbed 'Infinity-O' – and both of these P30 variants use OLED screens, so a notch is Huawei's only option. It's in good company, though; the OnePlus 6T uses the same design.

Here's the P30:

And here's the P30 Pro:

We don't have solid specs yet but we'd imagine that these phones will use either the Kirin 970 or 980 chipset, both of which are produced by Huawei. The 980 is one of the most powerful mobile processors on the planet, but the company is set to use the older 970 in the aforementioned Nova 4, so we could see a situation where the P30 uses the 970 and the P30 Pro has the more robust 980. In terms of RAM, we'd expect at least 6GB, maybe more in the P30 Pro version.

Another rumour is that the maximum resolution of the rear-facing camera array will be 38-megapixel, which seems odd when you consider that the Nova 4 has a 48-megapixel snapper on the back. How much difference this will make remains to be seen, but reports suggest that the P30 will offer "exceptional low-illumination performance", which is a positive.

The P20 and P20 Pro were two of Huawei's biggest handsets in 2018, so it's fair to expect this pair of devices to pretty high-profile next year. However, given that the 'hole-punch' screen design is likely to become 2019's headline feature, it could be that Huawei's leading phones lose ground to the Nova 4, which is being positioned as the company's mid-range challenger and will cost around £400 when it goes on sale in China.
