Matrix has returned to CES with an update version of its PowerWatch wearable. Called the PowerWatch 2, it evolves from a black-and-white display to a color one at 1.2-inches.
Like its predecessor, the PowerWatch 2 never needs to be plugged in for charging, relying on body heat (thermometrics) and solar power for juice. It’s compatible with Google Fit and Apple HomeKit, and is targeted at “outdoor types”. In essence, it’s a rough and tumble fitness tracker that doesn’t bog the wearer down with charger concerns.
The LCD color display is always on and resistant to scratches; the watch has a 47mm face with an aluminum case and rubber strap. It figures to be a rugged and durable experience and won’t win any fashion awards.
Features of the PowerWatch 2 include water resistance up to 200 meters, GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, and pace and cadence tracking. Although it does have some limited notification support, it’s not what you’ll get from a Wear OS wearable or Apple Watch. Additionally, it doesn’t make or take phone calls.
The main draw, of course, is the manner in which the watch charges itself. Simply wearing the watch is enough to continuously add to the battery while solar power helps with supplemental juice.
If you’re interested in pre-ordering the PowerWatch 2, you can currently find it for $199 on Indiegogo. It is expected to increase to $499 if, or when, it arrives in retail. It’s anticipated to launch in June 2019. As of today, it’s already well over the goal of $100,000 in backing with nearly one month to go.
