Mozilla has announced its Peak and Keon developer smartphones for the Firefox OS platform
Mozilla has officially given a sneak peek at the Firefox OS smartphone, or at least, a developer preview models anyway.
Said handsets have been created by a partnership between Geeksphone and Telefonica (O2’s parent company) and fairly closely resemble HTC’s 8X Windows Phone to our eye.
There are two models, the Peak and the Keon, one’s low-end and the other high-end in terms of internal hardware, allowing developers to configure their apps for different profiles.
The Keon is the lower-spec model equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor clocked at 1GHz with 512MB of RAM. It also has a 3.5-inch display, 3-megapixel, 4GB of storage, a microSD slot and a 1,580mAh battery pack.
The Peak is a bit more potent with a Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon dual-core chip at 1.2GHz, though it still has 512MB of RAM.
The display is larger at 4.3-inches and there’s both an 8-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel front-facer. Storage is 4GB onboard plus microSD and the battery is 1,800mAh.
Of course, these devices aren’t going to be available to consumers, but they do give an idea of what kind of hardware to expect from OEMs when Firefox OS goes live.
They’ll also mean there should be a relatively healthy app ecosystem by the time the platform launches proper and, ultimately, it’s nice to see the software running on devices made especially for it.
Mozilla issued a statement with the launch, saying:
‘Developer preview phones will help make the mobile web more accessible to more people. Developers are critical to the web and to Mozilla’s mission to make the web accessible to everyone. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use Firefox to discover, experience and connect to the Web. A web based on open standards and open technologies. We couldn’t have done this without web developers.’
‘Now we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we’d like to invite web developers to join us,’ it added.
