Google appears to be expanding its Android gaming repertoire to include a more involved service called ‘Play Games’, if leaked screenshots and details are any indication.
Play Games appears to add a number of gaming service features, according to a report from Android Police, which received the APK source from an insider. Chief amongst these is cloud game saves, meaning you can save progress in enabled games to your Google account and pick it up from the same spot on any other device running that game simply by logging in.
Play Games is also said to expand multiplayer functionality, so expect more Android games to let you get together with friends. Other features include leaderboards and achievements in-line with what you’ll find on Xbox Live and similar services. The whole thing is also linked up to Google+ for notifications, invitations and various other social aspects.
The service will come packaged as part of Google Play Services v3.1.36, allegedly this build is rolling out to some devices already but this is probably preparatory and we’re expecting to see some big reveal as part of Google I/O on May 15 this week.
Play Games has a new icon – a little green gamepad controller and will apparently be set up to sync in-line with your Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive and various other Google services which all sync on the same schedule. There appears to be some extensive services for curating a friends list for multiplayer, games lobbies, persistent scoring and all that jazz.
We'll be covering Google I/O as it happens so stay tuned for a full reveal alongside details of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and possilby some new Nexus devices very soon.
