Sony has officially announced its latest Xperia Android handset with the Xperia ZR.
The phone continues Sony’s recent trend of water and dust resistance, as well as waterproofing with IP55 and IP58 certification. However, Sony is now going for a slightly different angle saying that not only can the Xperia ZR survive underwater but you can actually take snaps with its 13-megapixel camera while it’s submerged.
We should point out, however, that Sony’s release makes it clear its certification only ensures the phone will be safe in 1.5 meters of fresh water, so, although it probably will work in a chlorine-filled pool or while scuba diving in a reef somewhere – you’ve got no guarantees from Sony to that end and on the off chance it does break you’re probably up a gum tree.
As with other models, the Xperia ZR features a dedicated camera button and images and video are captured in 1080p Full HD with an LED flash, HDR and Sony’s Exmor RS sensor.
The rest of the spec includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz with 2GB of RAM, NFC and 4G connectivity. There’s 8GB of onboard storage and the phone runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with the Sony UI on top.
The display sounds pretty strong as we’re used to seeing from Sony, it’s a 4.6-inch LCD with a 1280x720 pixel resolution and the Mobile Bravia Engine 2, together with Opticontrast. We’ve seen this combination of tech on the Xperia Z and Xperia SP already this year and the results are pretty impressive to say the least.
Colour should be very rich with strong blacks and whites, good brightness levels and an overall fairly sharp picture at 319 pixels-per-inch (ppi).
Sony says the Xperia ZR will go on sale in Q2, but doesn’t specify exactly when and precise availability is yet to emerge. While Sony hasn’t mentioned a price we reckon this will sit between the Xperia Z flagship and Xperia SP mid-range model.
