HTC may be continuing its mid-range Desire line-up this year with benchmark results showing two models bearing the brand along with a new number-based naming convention.
Previously HTC has named its Desire series with alphabetical tags, such as the Desire S, but the new benchmarking results found via GFX Bench show the Desire 200 and Desire 600 monikers instead. Whether this will change by the time of release remains to be seen.
The Desire 200 is thought to be a lower-end variant, though this is purely speculation based on the numeric naming convention. There are currently no spec details for the device but some reports suggest it could be the HTC G2 rumoured earlier in the year.
Despite being a wild stab in the dark, such a link would put the phone in the lower-end of the mid-range bracket with a 1GHz processor, a 3.5-inch HVGA resolution display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage plus microSD and a 5-megapixel camera.
There’s more information about the Desire 600 which is shown to have a 1.2GHz processor – although there’s no clue as to what make or model, but some variety of Qualcomm Snapdragon chip seems likely as there’s an Adreno 203 GPU onboard.
The display is qHD and the benchmark shows a dual-SIM capability – that usually means a device is meant for Asian markets but it’s not unheard of to see both single-SIM and dual-SIM variants of the same model launched in different regions, so don’t rule out a UK release just yet.
It's already been revealed that HTC is planning to release a smaller HTC One device, known currently as the HTC M4, using much the same design language as the flagship but with a lower spec and lower price point.
We expect that this will still be in the upper tier of the mid-range though and may be priced above these two HTC Desire handsets. It looks as though HTC is trying to hit a range of price points to compete with rivals such as Samsung.
We’ll bring you more details as they become available.
